When Your Brain Goes Brrr: Executive Functioning in the Kitchen
It's 6:47pm on a Wednesday.
The chicken is thawed. The kale, while a bit limp, is still alive. The quinoa is in the bag, judging from the pantry. A perfectly reasonable adult is standing in front of an open fridge holding a package of raw chicken, unable to perform basic addition.
DoorDash, sensing weakness, sends a push notification at 6:51. Thai food is on its way by 6:53.
Cue the shame spiral on the walk back from the door. "Why am I so lazy. Why can't I just cook a meal like a normal person. Everyone else is doing this. What is wrong with me."
Nothing is wrong, actually. What just happened in that kitchen has a perfectly boring neurological explanation, and once you know what it is, the whole event stops feeling like a personal failure and starts feeling like a Tuesday.
Cooking is 20 tasks in a trench coat
"Cook a meal for yourself" sounds like one task. It is 20 tasks in a trench coat pretending to be one.
Decide what to eat. Remember what's in the fridge. Know what's about to die. Pick a recipe. Check ingredients. Go to the store if you're out. Bring the bags in. Put them away. Pull things back out. Wash produce. Chop. Measure. Heat the pan. Time things so the rice and the vegetables finish at the same time. Don't burn anything. Plate. Sit down. Actually eat it. Container the leftovers. Wash dishes. Wipe the counter. Take out the trash if there's raw chicken packaging in it.
Each of those small actions runs on something called executive function, which is the cognitive machinery that handles starting a task, sequencing the steps, holding the plan in your head, and pulling yourself back when you drift. Think of it like the brain's air traffic control. When it's fully staffed, dinner happens. When three controllers called in sick, planes circle the kitchen island until somebody orders Pad Thai.
That's what "the brain went brrr" means. The tower lost its staff for the night, the chicken didn't get cooked, and the diagnosis has a name.
Why this happens to perfectly capable people
Here is the part most of us were never taught.
Executive function is a budget that goes up and down. It changes hour to hour, day to day, season to season. Even mild acute stress can knock the prefrontal cortex offline within minutes. The budget runs lower the week after a big work push, the week around your period, the week of a move, a launch, a grief, a flu.
The baseline runs leaner for some of us all the time. If you have ADHD, are autistic, have complex PTSD, are in perimenopause, are recovering from long COVID, are burned out, are postpartum, are healing from a concussion, your tower runs leaner on a Tuesday in February than your neighbor's does. None of that means anyone is broken. It means the staffing shortage shows up faster, and the same activities cost more.
And by 6pm on a Wednesday, the budget is at the bottom of the tank for almost everyone. Every decision the brain has already made today spent a little of it, which is a phenomenon researchers call decision fatigue, and yes, it has been measured. The same brain that ran a meeting at 10am is genuinely a different brain by dinner.
Shame, by the way, makes all of this worse. Calling yourself lazy on the walk back from the door actively degrades the same prefrontal regions that were already running low. It's pouring water on the engine you're trying to start. Which is why being meaner to yourself about not cooking has, mysteriously, only ever made cooking even harder.
The 6-stage chain
A meal moves through 6 stages, and at any one of them, something can go offline. Most "I just couldn't cook tonight" moments are a single stalled link in an otherwise functioning chain.
Use this as a self-assessment. The next time dinner doesn't happen, walk it backward and look for the wobble.
Stage 1: Deciding what to eat
The hidden demand is decision-making.
The brain goes brrr when there are too many options, or zero options that feel right, or the thing that felt great at the store on Sunday has decomposed into something else by Wednesday. The blank-fridge stare commences. (You know the one. The fridge has nothing to say.)
The fix is to decide once, on Sunday, and let that decision cover all 21 meals of the week. A short list of 3 to 5 default meals taped inside a cabinet door does it. Permission to eat the same thing forever and ever, amen. Novelty is a cognitive load nobody has to spend on a Tuesday.
Stage 2: Buying the ingredients
The hidden demand is planning ahead, plus a sneaky one that nobody talks about, which is the future-tense commitment buried inside every grocery purchase.
When you buy celery, you are signing up to be the version of yourself who chops celery on Wednesday at 7pm. The celery becomes a contract. The contract gets defaulted on. The celery turns to slime in the crisper, and everyone feels worse.
The fix is to buy convenience-forward. Pre-chopped, frozen, jarred, pre-cooked, delivered to the door by a person who has never met you and never will. The "cheat" version still counts (there is no cheat version, there is only food you ate). It also helps to separate buying from cooking, because different days are different brains.
Stage 3: Portioning
The hidden demand is precision under low energy.
"Measure out a half cup of pasta" sounds tiny and becomes a wall. The measuring cup is in the dishwasher. The dishwasher is unloaded by an executive function that has already been spent. The half cup might as well be a calculus problem.
The fix is to skip precision entirely. A handful works. A fistful works. The same bowl every time means the portion is built into the container, and your body is allowed to do this math on its own.
Stage 4: The actual cooking
The hidden demand is task initiation, sustained attention, and emotional regulation around the boredom of cooking.
The brain goes brrr in three classic patterns. The initiation freeze, which sounds like "I know what to do, I just cannot make my body start." The mid-cook drift, which sounds like "I went to look up one thing on my phone and now the rice is on fire." The frustration spike that tips into "forget it, I'm ordering out, I deserve this, the algorithm has been showing me Thai food all day."
The fix is to lower the bar from cooking to assembly. A meal can be cold, raw, microwaved, or composed entirely of things that came out of packaging. Body-double the task by getting on the phone with a friend or putting a podcast on so the cooking happens with company. Commit to the first 2 minutes and let the rest unfold from there, because starting is the hard part and continuing is mostly momentum.
Stage 5: Eating it
The hidden demand is interoception (the inner read of hunger and fullness) and emotional safety.
The brain goes brrr when the food got made but the appetite has ghosted. Sometimes anxiety crowded out hunger. Sometimes the act of eating itself feels loaded with something old.
The fix is to eat by the clock when your hunger signal is on airplane mode. Make the eating environment safe and unhurried. No doom-scrolling at the table, no work email, no eating standing up at the counter under fluorescent lights like a feral raccoon. "Good enough" eating beats "perfect" not-eating every single time.
Stage 6: Cleanup
The hidden demand is sustained attention after the reward is already gone.
This is the invisible tax. The dopamine hit happened at "ate the meal." Now the same depleted brain is being asked to wash dishes for free, with no applause, and it has opinions about that. The dishes don't get done. The kitchen becomes unusable. The next meal is harder, and the loop starts to collapse on itself.
The fix is one-pan and one-bowl meals, which reduce the cleanup load before it starts. Paper goods count as a legitimate accessibility tool, full stop. Cleaning as you go works on days there's capacity for it, and on days there isn't, the dishes are tomorrow's problem and tomorrow can handle them.
The question that cuts through all of it
The next time dinner doesn't happen, the question to ask is: where, exactly, did my brain go brrr?
That question, asked with curiosity, produces a plan. (The question shame likes to ask, which is "why am I so lazy," produces more shame. We're done asking shame for advice, on principle.)
Walk the chain backward. Did I decide what to eat? Did I have the ingredients? Could I start? Did I finish? The first "no" is the leverage point, which is the one spot where a small support changes everything downstream.
Nobody needs to fix the whole chain. The work is to find the one link that snapped and wedge something small under it, the way you'd shim a wobbly table leg. The whole table stops rocking on a 50-cent piece of cardboard.
A few things worth keeping on hand
Convenience counts. Pre-cut, frozen, delivered, assembled, microwaved are all legitimate accessibility tools. A nutritious meal you actually ate is more useful than a perfect meal you couldn't make, because the food in the body is the only food that counts.
Plan for the worst-day brain. On low-capacity days, the budget is smaller, which means the plan has to hold under those conditions. Build for the worst day, because that's the day the support has to work. Best-day plans are aspirational fan fiction and you know it.
Lower the bar. Willpower is finite and runs out at the worst possible moment, while a lower bar is reusable forever. Shrink the task, then shrink it again, and notice that the shrunken task tends to actually get done.
Externalize the plan. Working memory is the first thing to go under stress, so asking a stressed brain to hold the plan and execute the plan is asking it to do two things with one organ. Put the plan outside the head. A list on the fridge, a recurring phone reminder, a default-meal card. The fridge holds the plan, the person executes it, and everybody wins.
Decide once. Every choice spends a little capacity, so batching decisions weekly protects the daily budget for the things that genuinely need a decision.
Shame is the multiplier. Every stall point gets heavier when shame is stacked on top of it. Reframing "I'm a failure" as "my brain went brrr at Stage 4" is a functional intervention with real cognitive payoff. The kinder you are to yourself about this, the more dinners actually happen, which is one of the more annoying truths about the human brain.
To close
A person who can't cook for themselves on a Wednesday is rarely a person with a willpower problem. They're a person whose brain hit a wall at a specific point in a 6-stage chain, and the support that would unblock them is small, specific, and shame-free.
So find the stall, put the support there, and let the chicken wait until Thursday at 11am if it needs to. Eat the Pad Thai when the Pad Thai is what's available, notice where the chain broke, and put one tiny piece of scaffolding there before next Wednesday rolls around. That's the whole intervention
