Client Progress in Nutrition Therapy

By Emahlea Wilcher, MPH, MS, RD, LD, Registered Dietitian and Founder & CEO of New Approach Health.

Progress in nutrition therapy can show up in everyday moments: a meal that happens on a busy day, a new food that feels manageable, or greater confidence asking for support.

At New Approach Health, our holistic nutrition therapy brings together Psychonutrition, trauma-informed care, and somatic nutrition. Our work centers on adequate nourishment, practical eating skills, body awareness, and a more flexible relationship with food.

Building a more confident relationship with food

Our 2026 review identified documented changes in meal consistency, food variety, recognition of body signals, and confidence communicating needs. The themes below bring together observations across the reviewed records.

More consistent meals and everyday nourishment

Documented changes included movement from skipped meals, restrictive eating, and reactive eating after long gaps toward more regular opportunities to eat. Practical strategies described across the records included:

  • Building structure around meals.
  • Preparing food ahead through batch cooking.
  • Packing snacks for time away from home.
  • Using reminders and convenience foods.
  • Planning and preparing dinners at home.

These changes reflect a central focus of our care: making nourishment accessible within the demands of everyday life.

Greater flexibility and variety with food

Reviewed records included progress with gradual, supported food exposure, expanding accepted foods, and trying unfamiliar items during restaurant meals. Other documented changes involved preparing for travel, eating out, and returning to family meals with a workable plan.

Food flexibility can have personal meaning: more available meal options, greater participation in shared experiences, and room for enjoyment and connection around food.

Stronger awareness of hunger, fullness, and body signals

The review identified descriptions of hunger, thirst, and fullness becoming easier to recognize. Symptom tracking also brought attention to patterns that could be discussed during nutrition visits.

In our approach, noticing a body signal is connected to deciding what support might be useful. That may involve nourishment, meal structure, a change in routine, or a question for the care team.

More confidence expressing needs around food

Documented progress extended to asking for support in sessions, setting boundaries around food conversations, and speaking to oneself with greater kindness. The review also included changes in responding to difficult emotions around meals.

These observations reflect the place of choice, communication, and self-compassion in nutrition care. Making preferences known and participating in care decisions are meaningful skills in their own right.

Returning to nourishment when routines change

Reviewed records described returning to nourishment after illness, travel, and stressful periods. These experiences also informed adjustments to eating plans and support.

Reminders, accessible foods, packed snacks, and structured meals provided practical options. Our care emphasizes developing skills and supports that can adapt as circumstances change.

What can you work toward in nutrition therapy?

Your goals can reflect your health needs, food preferences, daily responsibilities, and the experiences you want eating to make possible. Together with your dietitian, you can identify practical changes to work toward.

  • Having a reliable meal option on a demanding day.
  • Understanding patterns in hunger and appetite.
  • Feeling more prepared for a restaurant visit or shared meal.
  • Communicating food preferences and support needs.
  • Developing a manageable plan when routines change.

These are examples of possible care goals. Your plan and pace are developed around your individual circumstances.
